MODERN ENGLISH GARDEN

Located in University Place, this bungalow’s backyard called for a low-maintenance Modern English design that offered tranquility and a safe entertainment space for children and adults. Our design approach incorporated the home’s axes and architectural elements to create an aesthetically-pleasing design that contains three “outdoor scaled rooms”—the pool and veranda, the pool and fireplace seating area, and the parterre garden. Captivated by the patterning details of the home, geometric elements were incorporated into the landscape design and furniture to create the perfect balance and proportion. From the four Eagleston Holly trees and Boxwood spheres to the four corners of the elaborate parterre garden and notched corners of the pool, the use of quad geometry was infused to add visual drama. The open lawn-seating area is in line with the outdoor fireplace and anchored with Eagleston Holly trees on both sides, creating an inviting, yet intimate space. A crowned synthetic lawn adds simplicity and achieves the goal of creating an extremely low maintenance lawn which their puppy loves. Corner steps were left on the fence to allow children to climb and visit their neighbors, while the pool provides entertainment and relaxation with its arching jets. Fig ivy covers parts of the fence and the pool’s bench sits under the neighbor’s veranda, creating a grand focal point and offers dynamic views of the garden. Together, these elements cohesively reflect the architecture of the home and create the perfect balance between formal and informal design.
