The origins of the European Scaled Garden design in Houston landscape architecture

From an early age, Lanson was fascinated with design. This natural creativity was manifested in model building, jewelry design and art classes at the Glassell Museum.

As a student of landscape architecture student at Texas A&M, Lanson traveled through Europe to tour some of the world’s most famous gardens and architectural designs.

The European landscape and the art and architecture it reflected inspired Lanson as he developed a strong connection to historical spaces that would later inspire his unique approach to landscape design.

Lanson began work with Fred Buxton & Associates as an associate landscape architect before joining McDugald Steele, a landscape architect design build firm. As the senior landscape architect and vice president of design at McDugald Steele, he participated in over 50 award-winning projects at the state and national level.

Giving Back to the Community through Houston Landscape architecture
Sharing talents and time with nonprofit organizations in the community is a priority for Lanson B. Jones & Co. Over the years, LBJ has assisted with landscape construction plans and landscape maintenance to improve the curb appeal of the Johnson Public Library, Alley Theater, River Oaks Country Club, Lamar High School, ProVision and A.D. Players.

While speaking to a local group of landscape architects, Lanson developed a vision for a company that would connect his work, travel and studies. This experience prompted the creation of Lanson B. Jones, a Houston-based landscape architectural design firm in 1994, which was based on his signature specialty: European Scaled Gardens and symmetrical landscape and home design approach.

The European Scaled Garden incorporates the:

  • Personality of the client
  • Personality of the interior/exterior architecture which will fall under one of four styles: Italian, French, English and Contemporary
  • Use of cross patterning throughout
  • Use of architectural mirroring
  • Use of scaled outdoor rooms
  • Use of photographic vistas, axis and views
  • Use of classical formal and informal balancing
